leader harry reid has decided to remove the assault weapons ban from a larger reform package. it will, instead, be voted on as an amendment. nbc's mike viqueira joins us live now. mike, what happened? why did the majority leader decide that 157 different models of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines did not deserve to be a part of a broader bill to ensure that tragedies like that in aurora, in newtown, connecticut, never happen again? what's happened? >> reporter: well, you know, harry reid was faced with a very fundamental question, martin. he could put on what is essentially an unpopular measure, dianne feinstein notwithstanding, and that's a renewal of the assault weapons ban. he could put it on that base bill and have it bring down the entire bill. under that circumstances, by harry reid's estimation, it has fewer, martin, fewer than 40 votes in support in the united states senate. you can't blame it all on ted cruz and his compatriots on the republican side. there are several democrats who don't favor a renewal of the assault weapons ban. you need 60 votes. harry reid tol

debate. senate majority leader harry reid announcing the assault weapons ban authored by california senator dianne feinstein will not be included in the democratic gun control legislation that currently is working its way through the chamber. instead reid says feinstein's proposal will have, quote, an opportunity for a vote, possibly as a separate amendment. now this effort was sparked by the newtown school shooting in december and since then, we have seen a surge in applications for gun permits across this country. according to the fbi we saw a record 19 1/2 million background checks for firearms last year. nearly three million of them coming in december alone. that is the most for any month on record. and more than 7 million from december through february. that is a 54% increase from the previous year. this national trend is echoed in the microcosm of newtown, connecticut. where law enforcement say they have seen the pace of applications for gun permits double. so what does this all mean for the gun control debate, an effort going forward? joining me fox news political analyst jua

, what harry reid said. we know it's true because we've been reporting on this show really since the gun debate reignited after newtown that it's not just because republicans oppose it. it's also because of democrats, particularly in the senate. in fact, if you look at, we have a set of compiled -- some faces and names of democratic senators. if you look there's about a dozen. these are senators who have either outright said, no way to assault weapons ban, or those who run from us in the hallway when we try to ask or somewhere in between. the reason is most of them come from states where they're the whole concept of gun rights runs very wide and very deep. it would be cultural heresy many of them think to ban any kind of gun and to vote for that. the senators here may support other gun control like background checks or limiting high capacity ammunition clips, even trafficking, and so the thinking and it really has been all along, is that if they put the assault weapons ban in this broad gun control package, then the whole thing will go down whereas if they take it out, and put it as an a
